Shame feels like cold cotton sheets under my hands as I sit and watch you pack. The suitcase is hard and has a satin lining. I watch you fill it with clothes, carefully folding everything. So neat, as if someone is watching you. Someone other than me, I mean. You take a framed photograph from the wall and two books from the bedside table, and your watch, throwing them all into the case and closing it with a series of loud snaps. The sound of the case shutting is so definite, so final. There, it seems to say. That’s that.

My car is parked outside. I want to ask you, are you sure? Are you sure you’re sure? Your face is grim and determined, not happy. I don’t want you to leave your wife. I want you to stay. I want to finish it with you, just get up and walk away. But it’s too late; you’ve decided for us both, and I can’t find the words to tell you that it’s a mistake. You take my hand and I follow you downstairs, you bumping the suitcase against your leg, and at the front door you pick up the leash and you whistle, a choppy little whistle.
